Hermosa

Hermosa, along with Kilbourn and Kelvyn Parks, are today known as communities that have significant ties to their community and families. There are many families already living in these predominately blue collar neighborhoods, and more continue to relocate in to the neighborhood all the time, making these fantastic communities to settle down in.

But as recently as the 1990s, times were tough for Hermosa. It saw a surge in drug and gang activity, and as a result, many homeowners opted to relocate out of the area. The vacated properties in turn became hideouts for many of the gangs. This tendency is reversing, however, and in recent years this northwestern neighborhood has enjoyed increased community awareness and development. New businesses are moving into the area, and new construction is improving conditions. With many community beautification projects and an influx of economic labor, Hermosa has now become a principally family-oriented neighborhood. First settled by Swedish immigrants, Hermosa now is home to a principally Hispanic population.

Each district contains the park for which it’s named. These parks each provide a variety of facilities and activities, like sports fields, golf courses, playgrounds, paths for cycling and walking and open areas. Median home prices range from $135,000 to $170,000, though a few homes are valued at over $300,000. There are a number of public and private schools in these neighborhoods and a fine assortment of dining and entertainment options.

The neighborhoods of Hermosa, Kelvyn Park, and Kilbourn Park are accessible by CTA bus routes.
